Lithgow Library Grand Opening Celebration

Lithgow Library will be hosting a Grand Opening Event celebrating the refurbishment of the Library on Monday 13 March 2017 and everyone is invited to come along.

“This event is a great opportunity for the local community to see the new improvements and to hear about the wide range of free resources and services offered by their local Library,” said Lithgow City Council Mayor Stephen Lesslie.

The opening will start at 10.30am with special guests Paul Toole MP, Lithgow City Council Mayor Stephen Lesslie and Ellen Forsyth from the State Library of NSW. Entertainment will include performances from the Lithgow Linedancers and the Uke’n’Sing Group, followed by a scrumptious morning tea.

Thanks to a State Library NSW Public Library Infrastructure Grant of $118,027 and a financial contribution from Council, Lithgow Library has been transformed into a modern, functional, accessible and welcoming community space. New carpet, new Customer Service Desk, and new furnishings are key elements of the refurbishment.

To accommodate the new shelving layout, every single one of the 35,000 items in the Lithgow collection was moved and repositioned onto its new shelf.

No bookings are required to attend this celebration, just come along and join in. Library staff will be on hand to offer tours of the library and to sign up residents for free library membership.

Please contact the library for any further information on 6352-9100.

“The Summit of Her Ambition: The Spirited Life of Marie Byles” by Anne McLeod.

 Book Review by Miriam Scott

Equal rights for women, is a concept that in our present time and culture is widely accepted, almost taken for granted. However, without past champions would we be where we are today, or have the rights and freedoms we have today?

One such champion is Marie Byles, the first woman lawyer of NSW, who in the worked to change discriminatory laws, was Australia’s fist environmental lawyer, and an explorer-mountaineer who climbed virgin peaks in Canada, NZ and China.

The co-founder of Australia’s first Buddhist society, this intrepid woman amply demonstrates that the only limits to what we can accomplish are those we place on ourselves.
