Teen Journaling @ Lithgow Library

Lithgow Library will be hosting Teen Journaling sessions every Tuesday afternoon during school terms from 3.45pm to 5.00pm, starting Tuesday 14 March 2017.

These sessions are aimed at young people aged 12 to 15 years and will be facilitated by Meg Benson, the LINC Adolescent and Family Counsellor who has specialist skills in therapeutically applying expressive arts such as music, journaling and art. Meg will be joined by Mishy Rowan, a talented artist, who is currently the Art Therapy trainee at THRIVE (formerly known as Family Support).

“These innovative and engaging sessions will add to the range of activities on offer for Lithgow’s teenagers. Young people looking for something to do after school will find these sessions fun and valuable, “said Lithgow City Council Mayor Stephen Lesslie.

“As well as being enjoyable, the self–reflective nature of journaling is known to increase clarity of thought and feelings and enables a broadened perspective on one’s relationship to others as well as internally within the self,” explained Meg Benson. “Music can be complementary to this process and some say “music is what feelings sound like”.

Participants will use a variety of techniques in their scrapbook journals, such as drawing, painting, collage, poetry, narrative and storytelling. Topics to explore will include: ‘how to bring out the best in me’, ‘how to cope with a difficult situation’, ‘people I love ‘and ‘hopes for the future’. A 15 minute group session theme will start each group, and then participants may choose from a pool of activities or topics to focus on privately in their journals as they listen to a wide selection of music.

No bookings are required to attend these free sessions – just turn up and join in. Young people are asked to arrive and finish on time. Membership is free at your local library for all residents.
