children & young adults

The library provides a range of services and activities for children and young adults throughout the year.  Special activities are planned during school holidays.

Storytime

Storytime is a fun weekly program of stories, sons and craft that encourages a love of books and reading. Each session is designed to help develop skills such as language development, imagination, listening, creativity and fine motor skills.

Special Storytimes are held throughout the year to celebrate occasions such as Christmas, Easter, Grandparents Day, Harmony Day and many others. Visit our Special Event page for the latest special Storytime.

No Bookings are required for this free, weekly event.

Storytime is held:

  • every Wednesday at Lithgow Library at 10.30am
  • every Tuesday at Wallerawang Library at 10.30am
  • every Tuesday at Portland Library at 10.30am

Books for Babies

The Books for Babies initiative sees an information pack with a new book given to every new parent in the Lithgow area. We hope that by giving every new family the gift of reading we will help develop a lifelong love of books and reading.

Reading to your child, even newborn babies, for just ten minutes a day can greatly improve their language development, the ease with which they learn to read, and their future skills development.

Lithgow Library Learning Centre in conjunction with Lithgow Community Health distribute a book kit to all new parents while they are accommodated at Lithgow Hospital.

The kit contains information and resources aimed at sharing many wonderful hours introducing, from birth the joys of communication. As well as a complimentary story book and reusable library bag, the kit contains suggestions on ways to best utilise time to encourage a love of reading.

Table Top Games

Suitable for young and old table top games are held every Friday afternoon in the Lithgow Library Main Street branch meeting room from 3.00 pm-6.00 pm.

World War 2 battle games, Warhammer and Star Wars games are played. Open to all ages but children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult.
