Lithgow Library invites the community to celebrate History Week with their display celebrating Andrew Brown and his contribution to the Lithgow Community. History Week 2024 runs from 6 September, but the library will be celebrating the whole month.

The History Week theme ‘Marking Time’ will be highlighted by a display on one of the Lithgow Community’s founding fathers Andrew Brown. The display has a series of photographs from the library collection along with memorabilia and books.

Andrew Brown was a pioneer and the library will cover a large portion of his life from when he worked with James Walker of Wallerawang, his travels abroad and his land grant from Governor Brisbane of 200 acres, through to the creation of the flour mill for settlers in the Lithgow Valley. His ingenuity came to the fore with the flour mill as he saw a business opportunity to help those who were experiencing difficulty getting their wheat ground. He went on to create the woollen mill, and the Cooerwull Academy which is now the La Salle High School. He also had a hand in setting up the Temperance Foundation in Lithgow.

The display will be available to view from 3-27 September. The library has an interesting local history collection and History Week is an opportune time to find out more about the local area.

While you are in the library don’t forget to join up if you aren’t a member. Membership is free and is available to residents of any age.  You can also find out about the great resources available for loan and the other services the library provides.

Lithgow Library’s opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm and Saturday’s 9am to 12pm. The event is free, no bookings are required.
