Refugee week is an important celebration which allows communities to gain a better understanding of the different situations that force people into becoming refugees while promoting a culture of welcoming and acceptance in the community.
The theme for Refugee Week 2015 is “With courage let us all combine” and with this in mind Lithgow Library Learning Centre, in partnership with the Refugee Support Group, will be hosting an information session for both refugees and other members of the Lithgow community.
The welcome afternoon tea will be provided by members of the Lithgow Refugee Support Group on Tuesday 16 June 2015 at 4.00pm in the Lithgow Library, Main Street Lithgow. Special guest speakers will talk about the role of the Refugee Support Group, the experience of being a refugee and the services available in the Lithgow community. Library staff will also provide information on the services and the resources of the Library, which include material obtained from the Multicultural Services Department of the State Library of NSW in a variety of languages which library members can access.
“Lithgow is such a welcoming community so this afternoon tea will be a great way to get to know other local people from a range of backgrounds as well as learning about services for refugees in the Library and the general community,” said Mayor Maree Statham.
Providing a range of quality exhibitions and community programs that offer educational and social opportunities for all members of the community is part of Council’s Caring for the Community Strategy in the Community Strategic Plan 2026.
